Richie is one of our Costs Lawyer Advocates, having tailored his development at Paragon Costs towards providing a full service to clients that includes costs advocacy. His experiences range from defending receiving-party costs budgets at CCMCs in complex clinical negligence matters, to representing the paying party in a million pound commercial dispute at a Senior Courts Costs Office detailed assessment. In addition to the more familiar costs hearings, Richie will also conduct any interim advocacy that arises during the assessment process, such as disputes over interim costs certificates or Part 8 applications for an order for costs in solicitor-own-client costs assessments.
These experiences enable Richie to provide up-to-date training to solicitor clients, as he combines the courts’ approach to costs management or costs assessment with recent developments in the CPR and costs case law. He provides this training as a member of Paragon Costs’ specialist training team, and is a frequent speaker at our annual costs conferences . Richie has also represented both paying and receiving parties in mock CCMC hearings. Paragon Costs host these events for existing and prospective clients in order to demonstrate how case management is dealt with in practice by the courts.
When not conducting hearings or providing training Richie remains involved in all aspects of the costs management and costs assessment processes. He has prepared bills of costs and costs budgets exceeding £1million in value; negotiated settlements for both paying and receiving parties in complex, high value litigation; drafted successful applications for relief from sanctions and solicitor-own-client costs assessments; and advised several litigants in person. These experiences enable Richie to provide advice that is as detailed, practical and commercial as required by any given situation. It also means Richie is comfortable conducting entire matters from inception through to a final hearing, or taking on external instructions in ongoing matters where advocacy is required.
Richie frequently provides analysis of developments in costs case law, which can be found on Paragon Costs' "Latest News" webpage. He is also a member of LexisPSL's Case Analysis Expert Panel and has written several articles for their Dispute Resolution insights service.
